Asia e University (AeU)
Professor Dato' Ansary Ahmed, PhD graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from the University of Liverpool in 1979. He obtained his PhD in Molecular Biology in 1983 from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom. He first started his academic career as a tutor for the Department of Genetics and Cellular Biology in University of Malaya, and he received his full Professorship in 1998. In UM, he served as Head of Department of Genetics and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Science. He was also the Founding Dean for the Institute of Postgraduate Studies. He is the co-founder of Open University Malaysia as its Senior Vice-President which now boasts an enrolment of over 80,000 students.
At the national level, he has been actively involved as a steering committee member of the National Bio-technology Group; Special Science officer at the Malaysian Industry Government Group for High Technology (MIGHT); and at the Science Advisor Office, Prime Minister's Department. He also served as member of the Task Force National Technology Mapping Project, National Innovation System and headed the Pharmaceutical Secretariat MIGHT.
Professor Dato' Ansary is also active internationally. He is a member of UNESCO Kornberg 21st Century Visionaries for Higher Education, and represented Malaysia by serving as a member of the Board of Trustees, Asean University Network. He was Project Director for Total e learning solution, Ministry of Higher Education, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and currently also serves as UNESCO consultant in the Technical Committee to Libya for the ICT transformation of Libyan universities.
More recently, Professor Dato' Ansary is the Founding President/CEO of the Asia e University which is a collaborative effort of 31 Asian countries under the Asian Cooperative Dialogue. Professor Dato' Ansary was also awarded by Enterprise Asia the Most Promising Entrepreneur in recognition of Asia e University's great success as start up in 2010. In recognition of his contributions both nationally and internationally, he was conferred in 2005 the Darjah Johan (Champion of the State) Negeri Pulau Pinang, and in 2007 the Darjah Paduka Mahkota Perak, by the DYMM Sultan of Perak Darul Ridzuan which carries the title Dato'.
